WSET Intermediate Certificate Course
Level Two


The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Intermediate Certificate course is intended as vocational training in product knowledge for those employed in the drinks industry but who have little previous knowledge of the broad range of alcoholic beverages available. The qualification is suitable wherever a good level of product knowledge is required to underpin job skills and competencies.

The WSET Intermediate Certificate course is also appropriate for those not employed in the drinks industry but who want a serious education in wine, and wish to broaden their knowledge in a structured way. Wine tasting is a part of every class.

The WSET recommends that students complete at least 14 hours of personal study outside the classroom hours during their course of study.

Course Program - Level 2 Systematic Approach to Tasting and food and wine matching

♦ Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
♦ Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc
♦ Syrah, Grenache and Riesling
♦ France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and New World countries
♦ Sparkling and sweet wines
♦ Fortified wines and spirits and liqueurs

We offer the Intermediate Certificate Home Study course for those outside the greater San Francisco area who cannot come to San Francisco or Sonoma for classes. Home Study students receive the same materials as in-class students, along with a list of recommended wines to taste. Telephone support is available from DWS staff. To take exams, students generally must come to San Francisco or Sonoma. The fee is $400 and includes books, materials and exam.

WSET Advanced Certificate Course
Level Three

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 3 Advanced Certificate course is intended to provide in-depth knowledge of a wide range of wines and spirits and is open to students who hold the WSET Level 2 Intermediate Certificate or can demonstrate knowledge at Intermediate level through completion of equivalent education courses or sufficient wine trade experience.

The WSET course covers wines and spirits of the world in considerable depth over 35 hours. All sessions include tastings.

The WSET Advanced Certificate is a unitized course and requires students to prove competency in theory and tasting. The examination for the Advanced Certificate is in two parts, a theory examination of 50 multiple-choice questions and four short-answer questions and a tasting examination consisting of a blind tasting of one wine.

The WSET recommends that students complete at least 56 hours of personal study outside the classroom hours during their course of study.

The WSET Advanced Certificate is a prerequisite for students wishing to progress to the Level 4 Diploma Course. Students cannot enroll in a Diploma course until they have passed the Advanced Certificate.

Spirits Professional Certificate

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 Professional Certificate in Spirits is intended to provide a thorough knowledge of spirits and liqueurs to underpin job skills and competencies, for example in customer service and sales in hospitality, retail, wholesale and spirits industry.

No previous experience in spirits is required and this course is appropriate both for students with a professional interest in spirits and for those who wish to broaden their education of this fascinating subject.

The WSET Professional Certificate in Spirits course covers the history production and styles of principal spirits and liqueurs of the world. Each session will include a comparative product tasting.

Examination is by a one-hour multiple-choice examination on the final day.

The WSET recommends that students complete at least 14 hours of personal study prior to commencing the course.
